[email protected]Headaches are no fun. Some people will only experience short-term headaches every now and then, but for some people headaches are frequent and/or long-term.
The good news is that often physiotherapy can help you to alleviate your headache.
In some instances headaches are actually referred pain from the neck. This means that pain arising from the neck is felt as a headache. This is a condition called “cervicogenic headache” which is very common in students and office workers. In these instances physiotherapy can provide hands-on treatment to relieve pain from structures such as joints and muscles in the neck, and can provide exercises, taping, postural education etc, to help this pain being an issue again in the future.
Other types of headaches, while not entirely arising from the neck, can be compounded by pain and/or muscle tightness in the neck. In these instances it’s definitely worth consulting a GP to see if an underlying cause of your headaches can be determined, but also worth seeing a physiotherapist because symptoms can often be alleviated by treating the neck and shoulders.
Headaches can also sometimes be caused or contributed to by issues such as stress and lack of quality sleep. Physiotherapists are trained to help provide strategies to address these issues as well.
